I am honored to follow in Carolyn Ho and Tommy Wang’s footsteps as chair of the Genomics and Precision Medicine Council. Our scientific mission highlights how our work embraces much of contemporary cardiovascular discovery and translation: to advance scientific efforts, education, and career development in genomics, translational biology, molecular epidemiology, clinical genetics, and to apply translational discoveries to clinical care. The tools we now have to address this mission make this an exhilarating time to be in cardiovascular science.

One of the marquis accomplishments of the Council over the challenging past two years has been the development of a certificate program in Cardiovascular Medical Genetics – a heavy lift by many Council members. The 12 component modules will be rolled out over the next year and reflect the increasing recognition of cardiovascular genetics as an emerging and distinct discipline. In addition, we are not only leading scientific advances in our own discipline, but our broad reach means we participate with many other councils in joint initiatives such as Scientific Sessions programming and scientific statements. Our goal is precisely that of the AHA: to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives, and to accomplish that goal; we commit to be champions for health equity and to advance cardiovascular health for all, including identifying and removing barriers to health care access and quality.

The Genomics and Precision Medicine Councilis young, established only in 2009, and growing. We welcome new members; we look forward to continued engagement within our community and across AHA. I encourage you to get involved -- reach out to council leadership with any questions, continue to produce high-end science, and volunteer to participate in the scientific statements and other Council activities!
