The Marvin Moser Clinical Hypertension Award recognizes a qualified mid-career or senior Hypertension Clinician for their dedication to the treatment and care of hypertensive patients. The award was established to honor the memory of Dr. Marvin Moser, one of the leading figures in the field of hypertension, and the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Clinical Hypertension.

After completing his cardiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, Dr. Moser served as the Chief of Vascular Disease and Hypertension at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. In the 1950’s when hypertension was only recognized in its most malignant form and debilitating procedures were the mainstay of treatment given the lack of antihypertensive medications, Dr. Moser was one of the first to suggest that hypertension had far greater prognostic importance than just its immediate effects on major life-threatening events. He was a pioneer in the exploration of drug therapy for reducing blood pressure thus making the treatment of hypertension possible. Dr. Moser concluded his career as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a member of the AHA Council on Hypertension at the time nomination is submitted. Join or renew today!
  • Must be mid-career level or higher and have been involved in treating hypertensive patients as a major component of his or her practice experience.
  • Must be currently teaching or have been active in teaching.
  • May have had an active role in developing guidelines and in clinical trials that focus on improving blood pressure control.
  • May be involved in community programs.
  • Notwithstanding the above, the AHA Officers have the discretion to determine eligibility for the award in extraordinary circumstances when there is an issue relating to AHA policy or positions or other potentially controversial issue relating to the positioning or perception of the AHA.
  • Previous awardees are not eligible to re-enter the competition in subsequent years.
  • There are no citizenship requirements.

How to Make a Nomination/Required Documents

Electronic submission through the Council Awards Application System is required. Hard copies of any part of the nomination cannot be accepted. Please follow instructions for ProposalCentral, the new Council Awards platform.

The nomination file (submitted on the nominee’s behalf) should contain the following documents in PDF format and must be submitted through the Council Awards Application System for consideration for this award:

  • Nominee's curriculum vitae and bibliography
  • • A signed letter of nomination from the sponsor and one supporting letter. The letters should clearly articulate the major contributions of the nominee to the field of hypertension.
  • The letters should show that the nominee was, or is, involved in treating hypertensive patients as a major component of his or her practice experience.
  • The letters and CV must show that the nominee had an active role in developing guidelines and in clinical trials that focus on improving blood pressure control.

Review Process

The nomination file will be reviewed by the Council on Hypertension’s Award Committee, and they will meet via teleconference to decide the winner based on the based on the eligibility criteria. This committee is appointed and determined by the Council of Hypertension Nominating Committee.

Prize

The award will be presented at the Hypertension Scientific Sessions.

The honoree will receive:

  • $2,000 honorarium
  • Complimentary registration to the Hypertension Scientific Sessions
  • Two complimentary tickets to the Council Dinner
  • Engraved plaque
  • Round-trip coach airfare at the 21-day advance purchase rate (up to $1,000 domestic and up to $2,000 international) to and from the awardee’s home airport to the conference
  • Hotel reimbursement (room + tax) for one night at the conference rate
  • Ground transportation to and from the awardee’s home airport to the conference
  • Meal reimbursement up to $70 for the awardee (alcohol excluded)
