Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must be members of the AHA at any level by the time of application. If you need to become an AHA Professional Member, you should do so before submitting your abstract and award application materials. Join or renew today!
Applicant must be active in research and still be in training as an undergraduate or pre-doctoral student, or be active in research and within 10 years of completing medical fellowship (or residency as NIH states, MDs would be Fellows for 3-6 years of the 7-10), terminal degree or highest certificate (e.g. MSc, PhD), as of the award application date.
Notwithstanding the above, the AHA Officers have the discretion to determine eligibility for the award in extraordinary circumstances when there is an issue relating to AHA policy or positions or other potentially controversial issue relating to the positioning or perception of the AHA.
Previous awardees are not eligible to re-enter the competition in subsequent years.
There are no citizenship requirements.
Past recipients of the Council on Hypertension Excellence Award for Hypertension Research are not eligible for this award.
Members of the Council on Hypertension Awards Committee are not eligible to write letters of support for the applicant.

Evaluation Criteria

The Council on Hypertension Awards Committee will judge applications.

Applications will be judged on the following:

Applicant’s background, experience, publications, and overall contributions to hypertension and cardiovascular research.

The Council on Hypertension Awards Committee will judge applications.

The following items must be submitted through the Council Awards Application System for consideration for this award:

A full Curriculum vitae, including all publications (abstracts not necessary).
Reprints of three first-authored publications by the applicant.
A letter of nomination from a Council member detailing overall contributions of the applicant to hypertension and cardiovascular disease

Members of the Council on Hypertension Awards Committee are not eligible to write support letters for applicants.

AHA Professional Membership is required of all applicants for this award. AHA membership at any level is required by the candidate by the time the award materials are submitted.

Prize

The award will be presented at the Hypertension Scientific Sessions.

The honoree will receive:

$1,000 honorarium
Complimentary registration to the Hypertension Scientific Sessions
One complimentary ticket to the Council Dinner
Engraved plaque
Round-trip coach airfare up to $1,200 at the 21-day advance purchase rate to and from the awardee’s home airport to the conference
Hotel reimbursement (room + tax) for one night at the conference rate
Ground transportation to and from the awardee’s home airport to the conference
Meal reimbursement up to $70 (alcohol excluded)
Awardee will be invited to present a lecture at the High Blood Pressure Research Council of Australia’s Annual Scientific Meeting (HBPRCA) held in Australia, typically in May the following year. Travel reimbursement is limited to $3,000 and must be coordinated through the Awards and Lectures Manager by emailing [email protected].
