Cardiovascular nurse scientist Bunny J. Pozehl, PhD, APRN-NP, FAHA, FHFSA, FAAN is a Professor in the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing in Omaha Nebraska. She holds courtesy faculty appointments in the Department of Internal Medicine-Cardiology and the Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology at UNMC. Dr. Pozehl has dedicated her research and practice to the care of patients with heart failure. Her research focuses on adherence self-management and outcomes in response to exercise training for patients with heart failure. Dr. Pozehl and team developed the multi-component Heart failure Exercise And Resistance Training (HEART) Camp intervention to promote adherence to exercise. This efficacious theory-based program focuses on strategies to improve knowledge, self-management skills, attitudes, and self-efficacy for exercise. Dr. Pozehl’s research has been supported by the National Institute of Nursing Research and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institute of Health, the American Heart Association, and the American Nurses Foundation. She has received the Dr. Anselmo Alonso Research Investigator Award from the American Heart Association - Nebraska Affiliate, the College of Nursing Pennie Z. Davis Faculty Research Award, and a Distinguished Scientist Award from UNMC, a Virginia Stone Scholar award from the American Nurses Foundation, and the Nursing Research Leadership Award from the Heart Failure Society of America. Her mentoring has been recognized with the Donna Westmoreland Faculty Mentoring Award and the Inspirational Mentor of Educators Award from UNMC. She values the opportunity to mentor the next generation of nurse scientists.
