Applications will be judged on the following criteria submitted through the Council Awards System. The ATVB Diversity Committee will assess the candidates’ backgrounds, accomplishments, and overall contributions to promoting diversity and inclusion and will select the winner based on the following criteria:

• Standing member status of the ATVB council for at least five years.
• Holds a current faculty position.
• Have track record of training students, scientists from diverse background, and underrepresented groups (See NIH Diversity in Extramural Programs for more information).
• The candidate should have a plan to attend the ATVB spring meeting for the award cycle.

All applicants must be professional members of the AHA for a minimum of 5 consecutive years by the time of application submission. If you need to become an AHA Professional Member, you should do so before submitting your abstract and award application materials. Join or renew today.

The nomination file, submitted on the nominee's behalf, should contain the following documents in PDF format:

• A letter of nomination (max 250 words) or candidate statement, if self-nominating, describing the nominee’s contribution to promoting diversity and training diverse students, scientists, and advocates of diversity,
• One letter of recommendation from a senior mentor/division or department chief,
• Up to two (2) letters of support from a former mentee,
• A list of mentees,
• A copy of nominee’s curriculum vitae and bibliography.

Current members of the ATVB Diversity Committee are not eligible to be nominated for the award.

Electronic submission through the Council Awards Application System is required for all award nominations and applications. Hard copies of the application cannot be accepted.

A username and password previously set up through online profile registration at Professional Heart Daily (PHD) will be necessary to access the application System. AHA Professional Members who are creating an online profile for the first time should make sure to register using their AHA member account identification numbers.

1. Log out of both ProposalCentral and your AHA Professional Heart Daily accounts.
2. Click the link for the Council Awards Application System.
3. You will be asked to login with your PHD Single Sign On (SSO) login. Choose Non-Employee Login.
4. You will then be redirected to the ProposalCentral landing page.
5. The first time you login to ProposalCentral, you will be asked to create an account or login. Login using your ProposalCentral credentials (your Login is your email) or create an account, if you do not already have one.
6. By logging in through SSO, a portion of your profile will be imported from PHD. Complete the remaining portions.
7. You will then be able to link your SSO login with your current account on ProposalCentral. Select Link Accounts.
8. After you have logged in to ProposalCentral, you will see a line of tabs across the top. From the grey tabs, select Grant Opportunities.
9. Select the blue button to the left of the screen above the table to Filter by Grant Maker. You will see two American Heart Association options; select American Heart Association Council Awards.
10. Look at the second column under the Programs heading. Here is where you will find open award programs.
    1. Each program may have one or more available awards to select from. Clicking the award name will take you back to the PHD awards page for information about the award(s) you have selected.
    2. To select an award and start the application, click the Apply Now button under the Apply heading on the right side of the screen.
11. On the left side of the application screen, you will see Proposal Sections. Start at number 1 and complete each section until you have submitted the application. (It is not necessary to complete the application in one sitting. Make sure you save your application often during the submission process.)

The award will be presented at the spring ATVB Council dinner at the Vascular Discovery: From Genes to Medicine Scientific Sessions. The winner is expected to give a three- to five-minute speech to highlight the importance of diversity in the ATVB Council and/or the AHA.

The awardee will receive the following:

• Engraved plaque.
• Complimentary ATVB Council dinner ticket. Attendance at the dinner is required.
• Complimentary registration to the Vascular Discovery: From Genes to Medicine Scientific Sessions.
